5 Simple Dorm Decor Ideas

Updated: Nov 15, 2020

What does your dream bedroom look like? Is it Bohemian? Preppy and stylish? Minimalist? No matter your style preferences, having a cohesive, well-decorated dorm room is a MUST. There are many understated perks when you put even the slightest design thought into your University dorm room. Interior design is more than what some may think of as a superficial standard, it's truly all about how it makes you feel. Why wouldn't you want a space that makes you feel at ease, reminds you of home, or inspires you to be the best version of yourself?!

Dorm rooms tend to get a bad rep. Are they unusually small? Maybe. Painted an awkward shade of off white? In most cases. Do they let you put so much as one nail in the wall? You can bet on your RA that is a hell no! Okay, so there may be some limitations when faced with a dorm, however these challenges just make pulling off the end result that much more satisfying. After all, you will be living here for the year, so you might as well make the best of it!

It may seem like a lost cause, but I assure you, there are many cheap & easy decorating ideas that can easily transform the space you are working with. Not only will the room then fit your style, but the way you decorate can be used to determine the vibe it gives off. Whether it be fresh & light, dark & moody, or warm & cozy, there are ways to customize the most boring of box rooms.

**I want to include a disclaimer and say that while these ideas are executed in a way that directly fits my style, each one can be personalized to make it your own. So let this post be of inspiration to you, and may you transform your room into a space that you truly appreciate & come to love.

1. DIY Photo Gallery Wall

A simple & inexpensive way to showcase your visual aesthetic, bring in color, and make a statement!

How I did it: Download photos from Pinterest (all of these are on my board: Dorm Collage), then print at FedEx Office.

2. Throw Pillows!

Ah, the classic go-to for bringing together a dorm bed and tricking yourself into loving the twin XL. An easy way to implement your color palette, try mixing fun patterns & textures!

Places to shop: Mine are from Walmart, Ross, Pier 1 Imports, and TJ Maxx.

3. DIY Macrame Wall Hanging

You'd be surprised at how simple these actually are to make! They offer a Bohemian, handcrafted element when spicing up that boring wall.

4. Plants

Fake or alive, they are the perfect way to bring the outside in. You can pretty much set a cute plant anywhere and it instantly adds a level of sophistication to the space.

Places to shop: Amazon, TJ Maxx, Target, & Publix (where I got my real one).

5. Mix & Match Baskets

A simple, inexpensive way to keep all your things organized! This is also a quick way to add more texture to your space if it is feeling a bit cold or flat.

Places to Shop: Mine are from various thrift stores, but TJ Maxx & Home Goods also have a great selection.
